Discover New Products

Food Trends is an editorial series that highlights new food products. Among considerations for inclusion are availability and accessibility, category diversity and nutrient profile. Food & Nutrition is not paid for placement in this series, and although editors occasionally receive samples from manufacturers and publicists, it is not required. Advertorials

While advertising in any publication of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics must be reviewed by staff registered dietitians, the editors of Food & Nutrition do not review advertorials.

Photography and Artwork Guidelines

Food photography is a powerful component of a successful publication centered on diet, nutrition and health. Beautiful artwork serves to educate and inspire readers. However, there are challenges as well as crucial responsibility to represent food as accessible, approachable, authentic and unintimidating. To this end, Food & Nutrition Magazine® mandates that its editorial photographers and food stylists adhere to these guidelines:

  • Dishes must follow Food & Nutrition Magazine® recipes exactly as written. Ingredient substitutions due to sourcing issues must be approved in writing by the editors and such substitutions must be notated in the printed recipe.
  • Garnishes or accouterments that are not in the Food & Nutrition Magazine® recipe may not be added on set.
Plating and styling must reflect the manner in which the recipe typically would be served by a home cook.
  • All Food & Nutrition Magazine® recipe developers supply finished product photos; food stylists must emulate the finished product display as closely as possible under the guidance of Food & Nutrition Magazine®‘s art director.
  • When plating as an individual serving, the portion must reflect the actual serving size as indicated in the recipe.
  • Artificial elements, techniques or tools (i.e. glues, pins, glazes, shellacs, etc.) may not be used by Food & Nutrition Magazine® food stylists, including thickeners, emulsifiers or other substances that are not part of the recipe.
