If you’ve ever had a consultation or conversation with an RD or RDN, you may be wondering what he or she is thinking. “Why does she ask all those questions?” “Does he think I’m a terrible person for drinking a soda?” “I bet RDNs only eat kale and quinoa!”
In reality, here are four things RDNs want you to know.
We Care about More Than Just What You Eat
Health, physical activity, overall lifestyle — we need to learn about them all in addition to the food choices you make. RDNs are even interested in the medications and supplements you take, because those can affect how your body metabolizes or absorbs various nutrients.
We Are Not the Food Police
Dietitians are here to help you, not judge you. If you fudge a little when reporting what or how much you eat, we can’t get a true idea of what’s going on in your body and how to work with you.
We’re Human, Too
Dietitians know which food choices are better and more nutritious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t treat ourselves. I give myself a break about food choices and I expect everyone to do the same. < No one can be perfect.
We Have Worked Really Hard to Be Able to Help You
After earning a bachelor’s degree and completing an intensive dietetic internship and passing a rigorous national registration exam, we have spent a huge amount of time studying the science of nutrition. We pride ourselves on our evidence-based practice, and strive to give you quality advice.
Every RDN lives in the same world as you. We recognize the myriad obstacles to health, and we want to learn about your unique situation so we can use our expertise to help you achieve better health!
